The damage above occurred about 7 AM. A couple of hours
later the source (elk) had moved down the street.

At this neighborhood house aspen
in the front yard are protected by huge welded wire
cylinders. They work, but they are also very large,
unsightly, expensive, and difficult to maintain.


Unfortunately these are not the
greatest photographs. There are a number of calves
among the larger beasts. And perhaps because of the young,
this was a particularly loud herd--lots of female squealing.


Heard and then spotted later in
the day: a gigantic mother and her two calves that were
separated from the herd. The mother was squealing frequently
seemingly in an attempt to keep tabs on her young. She ended
up going one way--to the left--while the not so little ones went
to the right. She then backtracked and the three of them
raced down the hill.
