More Plantskydd

THINK Home

Thanks to wolf urine, aspen are coming up everywhere.  No question it worked but without a scent dispenser effort it is too much of a pain to spray it constantly and there is almost nothing you can do during a several days of rain.  Besides, it probably isn't human animal treatment.  Nope, wolf urine is out.

But the wolf urine thing gave me new-found faith in chemicals.  Here's a list of five of the top ones:

  1. Plantskydd

  2. Miller's Hot Sauce

  3. Deer Away

  4. Deer Off

  5. Liquid Fence

I had already had poor experiences with Bobbex and some other brands that whose names I can't remember.

Lest there be any confusion, I need to stress that Plantskydd has been very affective in my trials.  Following are a number of photographs (click for larger image).

"It seems to work!"  (3/23/06)

"First applied on Saturday the 18th of February.  I sprayed a lot—about four-fifths of the 24 ounce spraybottle I had filled.

"First noticed large animals or tracks was Thursday 3/16—OVER THREE AND A HALF WEEKS!  Earlier that week I had called friends to inform them of the seemingly complete success..  That was when a large herd of elk was down below and made their way up the mountain via the road (when I directed them that way) and up the bottom of my driveway toward the neighbor’s fenced yard in the back.  The herd was maybe as many as 40-50 animals.  When I woke that morning I also noticed, for the first time since the spaying, large hoof marks and droppings.  Evidently a male had prowled around the night before.

"This was after several snowfalls since the application.  To me, the smell had largely dissipated.

"After the beasts had cleared I sprayed the remaining contents of the bottle (only on rocks in the front and sides).  There have been no tracks or animal sightings since.

"The only animal that I have witnessed in my yard was a medium-sized mule deer.  That was in mid-March.  There is a family of 6-8 deer “comes through” nearby yards about every other day.  Typically I chase them out of my yard and they tend to follow the same route primarily in neighbor’s yards.  I tend to think the wolf urine is less effective on them, particularly younger ones.

"BUT, my experience suggests it is very effective on the older, larger males that wander around mostly at night.  These animals seems to create the tracks, and leave the scent, that helps to attract families and herds."
