What is Plantskydd?
Plantskydd is an animal repellent developed in Sweden—now made in USA
from 100% natural ingredients. The 'active' ingredient is dried blood
(porcine and/or bovine)—recognized by the Environmental Protection
Agency (EPA) as an environmentally safe ingredient and is exempt from EPA
federal pesticide registration.
Is Plantskydd safe to use?
Plantskydd contains no synthetic additives, is non-toxic and is not
harmful to animals or the environment when used as directed. Caution: wash
hands after use; wash fruit and veggies before eating; do not ingest
powder or liquid solution. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
How does it work?
Animals avoid plants before they bite—not after! Plantskydd repels by
emitting an odor that browsing animals associate with predator activity.
The odor is not unpleasant to applicators or planters. Proven* effective
in extensive field trials against deer, elk, moose, rabbits, and opossum.
Will Plantskydd hurt my dog?
Some users have reported that the family dog is quite enamoured with
Plantskydd when it is still wet on the plants. It will not harm animals
but it’s best to leave Fido inside until the treated plants are dry.
How long can I keep Plantskydd in storage, before use?
• Soluble powder concentrate Plantskydd in its original packaging lasts
2 years when kept in a dry, dark, cool (not freezing) place. Plantskydd is
a 100% natural product and will start to “go off” in warm weather.
Once mixed into solution, use within a few days. Tightly re-seal unused
powder and store as above.
If the leaves curl on test plants, rinse with a fine spray of water and
dilute Plantskydd further e.g. 1 pkg to 2-3 gallons water, prior to
re-applying. Plantskydd will darken leaves temporarily—they return to
their normal color in a couple of days.
Note: For aesthetic reasons, use of a concentrated solution on very fuzzy
leaves like Santolina, Lamb’s Ears and Lavender is not recommended
—dilute solution using more water if necessary. Fortunately, these
plants are usually not preferred by our furry friends.
2.2 lb. Soluble powder concentrate will treat approximately 400-600 plants
1 ft high. Ideal for those requiring increased flexibility to mix large
amounts of Plantskydd at varying dilution rates e.g., nursery, forestry
applications (BEST VALUE).
Treat plants before browse begins, in spring or fall. Frequency of
application is dependent upon the growth rate of the plant. Always treat
new growth until the plant has reached full size or leaf-out. Plantskydd
lasts up to 6 months over-winter on dormant plants and up to 4 months
during the active growing season.
Ideally, Plantskydd is applied in the morning or late afternoon when the
sun is not as strong.
IMPORTANT: Apply solution on dry plants and allow to dry thoroughly for at
least 24 hours before watering or rain.

APPLY ON DRY PLANTS
|
- Dip/Spray mainly tops of plant - until wet.
|
- FLOWER - spray mainly on green leaves.
|
- Expect some reduction in efficacy in warmer/sunny climates.
|
|
|
- Test sample plants to determine sensitivity.
|
- Needles/leaves darken temporarily after treatment - original
color returns in 18-36 hours.
|
- Apply at above freezing temperature.
|
- Avoid application in direct hot sunlight - for best results,
apply in early morning or late afternoon.
|
- Treating Pine seedlings during bud flush is not recommended
(OK before/after bud flush period).
|
- Spray mainly green parts of plants and avoid blossoms.
|
- DO NOT spray directly onto fruit or vegetables - wash before
eating.
|
- Avoid spraying concrete or wood.
|
- Allow to dry 1-2 days before watering.

Rating:
- No deer here!
Numerous brands of deer repellent sprays crowd the shelves at
nurseries and garden stores. Here in our small Montana town
bordered by wildlands we have a significant urban deer
population and the most effective (by far) repellent that I've
used is Plantskydd. OK, granted, it doesn't smell as sweet as
those prissy mint sprays and you need to be aware of which way
the wind blows when you apply it as a little of the
organically-based, potent smell goes a long way on skin and
clothes as well as plants. In short, it smells really bad (to
my human nose) for about a day after an application, but it
works really well at repelling deer for weeks. My nurseryman
says the smell makes him wretch. I think he is a whimp, but
his response is a good indicator of how effective it will be
on other mammals. The effective ingredient is pigs' blood in a
vegetable oil binder that keeps the product from being quickly
washed away by regular watering. The pigs' blood works by
emitting an odor that animals associate with predator activity
and stimulates a fear-based response which will have deer
(elk, moose, opossum, and rabbits, too) looking for somewhere
else to dine. I typically spray the product on the mulch or
soil at the base of my plants to keep it from discoloring
leaves. The product was originally developed in Sweden for use
in tree plantations that were being decimated by mammals.

Plantsksydd®
Which
repellents actually work ?
" ...Studies
investigating trends in efficacy of deer repellents indicate that, of
the 20 products tested, repellents with active ingredients that emitted
sulfurous odors i.e.: bloodmeal or egg solids, generally provided the
best results..."
"...Products that contained active ingredients which cause
pain/irritation (capsaicin, allyl isothiocyanate), or illness (thiram)
were less effective..."
"...Products that use a bitter taste (denatonium benzoate) were
usually the least effective in reducing damage by herbivores. Repellents
that were applied to plant surfaces were generally more effective than
capsules or other devices that produced an odor intended to protect a
specific area."
Dr. Dale Nolte, Dr. Kim Wagner, USDA/APHIS National Wildlife Research
Center, Olympia, WA
Fertilizing
Effects
As an added benefit,
Plantskydd deer repellent acts as a foliar feed fertilizer for many types
of plants. Bloodmeal, Plantskydd's active ingredient, has long been
recognized as an organic fertilizer. Studies performed by Pennsylvania
State University showed that the use of Plantskydd on a variety of
flowering plants resulted in a fertilizing effect.
"All plants tested that were treated with Plantskydd were larger,
had more flowers and generally had greener leaves. This response is
typical of the response created by an increased level of
fertilization."
E. Jay Holcomb, Professor of Floriculture Department of Horticulture,
Pennsylvania State University
