An aspen tree less than 8 feet high with a Tree ProtectorTM

After about ten years of experimenting and trying to grow aspen in a deer and elk ravaged area, we have found Tree Protectors to be the best overall solution.  They allow each individual tree to grow unobstructed and to sway in the wind.  This helps create strong, tall, healthy trees.

For mature trees Tree Protectors provide outstanding protection against damage, or worse!, to bark.

A problem, however, has always been:  What to do about new growth or trees under 8 feet tall?  Elk in particular will reach up and grab just about anything green, often pulling down the entire tree and killing it.

The photo at right is of a small, healthy, regenerating aspen  tree treated with several applications of Plantskydd over a one month period.  Its leaves were eaten, at least for this year.

Here is a group of 4 small aspen with short, 3-4 foot Tree Protectors.  Leaves and new growth protruded at the tops and was treated repeatedly with Plantskydd.  The trees have survived because of the Tree Protectors but most of the new leaf growth has been eaten. wpe4.jpg (99345 bytes)

Conclusion:  Tree Protectors alone may not be sufficient for smaller or fledgling trees . . .   Plantskydd is effective but may not provide a stand-alone solution . . .
